As summer starts to wind down, new routines start to take shape.
Whether it’s the kick-off of a new school year or the new season, there is a fresh energy in the air, and it’s time to harness it.
But a new routine isn’t about hype or overloading “life hacks”. It’s about structure and discipline.
Success is found in non-negotiables, not compromising. Set foundational rules and keep them, unapologetically.
Make these foundational rules non-negotiable and watch your new routine fall into place.
1. Lock in your sleep schedule
Forget “catching up” on weekends. There won’t be a need.
Set a schedule that has you going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning.
This will allow for an adequate amount of sleep, allowing for the recovery and energy you need to be ready for what the next day holds.
No more falling behind and needing to catch up.
2. Block your time. Add buffers.
If you don’t control your day, your day controls you. Building a calendar sets the tone and keeps you accountable. Set blocks of time for the things that matter: work, training, meals, and even downtime. Put all of it into your calendar and stick to it.
Then add short buffers in between. Ten minutes to reset is the difference between staying in control and keeping your routine and burning out and falling off it.
3. Move. Every. Day.
Don’t overthink it. Don’t overdo it.
It’s not about a singular two-hour workout every now and then. It’s about showing up every day.
Start with something you can repeat: walks, bodyweight work, or a quick lift. Stack the days. Consistency beats intensity when you’re building momentum.
Daily movement helps to give you the energy and clear-mindedness to stay strong in your new routine.
We aren’t saying it will be easy. It almost certainly won't be. Nothing new ever is.
On the other hand, nothing of value was ever gained easily, either.
Keep to these three simple basics: Sleep, structure, and movement, and slowly your “new” routine will become “your” routine.
